The ancient Egyptians lived in houses built from bricks made from the Nile mud. This was collected in leather buckets and transported to the building site. Here, workers would add straw and pebbles to the mud to strengthen it, and they would pour the mixture into wooden frames to make bricks. Then they would leave it to dry in the sun. When the house was built, it would be covered with plaster, and then painted inside with patterns from nature. Inside, the houses were cool because small windows only let in a little light. Wealthy families had large houses while the poor had suffice with tiny ones. Beyond the hall would be bedrooms and private apartments, and stairs to the roof. The kitchen was some distance away from the living rooms to keep away the smell. The Egyptian held parties in their houses which were enjoyed both by adults and children.
